Walking in Shropshire
Park in the car park of Morrisons or the Grazing Cow Pub. Walk back towards the traffic lights, keep on the right side of the pavement. Cross over the road at the pedestrian crossing. Keep Lawley Medical Practice on your right and walk along Hunter’s Rise. Turn right into Martingale Way and as soon as you have turned take the footpath to the left, keeping the postbox on your right. The footpath swings to the left and up on to Lawley Common. Follow the footpath across the common until you reach the main road.
Cross over the main road and take the footpath straight ahead of you, signposted to Horsehay Common. Walk for around 5 minutes. At a junction of footpaths go straight on, the road with the signpost ‘Unsuitable for HGVs’. Walk along the footpath. When you reach the road, keep going straight on over two wooden bridges to Horsehay Pool. You can feed the ducks here. Once the ducks are fed with your back to the pool turn left and walk around the lake, keeping at first the cottages to your right, then when you bend to the left, keeping the wall to your left.
As you leave the lake behind you, ahead you will see the Telford Steam Railway. Keep walking along the road, with the railway to your left, over the railway bridge, then turn immediately left into Fence Road. Follow the narrow tree-lined footpath until you reach the main road. Turn left and when you can cross over the main road. After a short distance you will see a signpost on your right to Newdale. Follow this footpath back over Lawley Common. Retrace your steps to the pub.
The pub is primarily a restaurant, but there is an area to sit if you just want to have a drink. There is a welcoming, family atmosphere and the staff are polite and friendly. There is a good range of wines at a reasonable price.
No dogs allowed in the pub.
Lyn says: This is a town walk and great for all the family as it takes in Horsehay Pool where you can feed the ducks. Flat and easy to follow it is a mix of old village and new town.
