Walking in Staffordshire
There is free parking outside the shops next to the Pigot Arms in High Street. With your back to the shops turn right and take the first right down Clive Road. After a while you reach Moor Lane on your left. Turn down Moor Lane.
Eventually you will reach a ‘T’ junction. Here there is a Ford to your right. Green Meadow Animal Sanctuary is on your left and Great Moor House on your right; go left up Great Moor Road. There are good views across to Wolverhampton from Great Moor Road. When you reach the main road, turn left. Cross over the road facing oncoming traffic. You are only on the main road for around 100 yards, then turn right into Hollies Lane.
Walk up Hollies Lane. When you reach a no through road sign, turn left into Warstone Hill Road. You weave past the Mill Stables and drop down back to the main road. Turn left, cross over and more or less immediately you will see a stile on your right. Go over the stile into a field. Keeping to the right edge of the field advance towards another stile. Go over the stile, keeping the field boundary to your right. When you reach a stream on your left you will see a double stile on your right. Go over the double stile into a field. Turn left. Keep to the left field boundary. Before the footpath bends to the right, take a hidden stile left. Go over the stile and you will see a stream.
From the stile you need to take a diagonal right direction, walking through the stream towards the higher bank on the opposite side. Once on the bank walk along the path, keeping the stream to your right. You come to woods and a stile. Go over the stile (be careful this stile is loose). You will see a footbridge over the stream, walk over the footbridge and follow the direction of the public footpath sign on the bridge, half right.
The path follows the meandering stream. Its beautiful.
A house emerges, fenced off on your right. You need to keep to the footpath with the fence on your right. We had to negotiate a fallen tree by stepping over low barbed wire. Once you are over here you reach a stile which takes you back on Great Moor Road. Turn right and soon you are back at the Ford. Retrace your steps back up Moor Lane, right into Clive Road and left along High Street.
Enjoy a glass of Nobilo Marlborough Sauignon Blanc wine in the relaxing atmosphere of the Pigot Arms. The wine was £4.25 for a 1.75cl glass. Very refreshing!
Lyn says: New territory for us and a lovely area with posh houses, fords and a lovely meandering stream.
